And as always, Grimnir is able to give us a fascinating history lesson on what has inspired this part of The Frostrune story:
Going into service abroad was nothing new to the Vikings. Even the roman empire had Germanic mercenaries centuries before the Viking age, and there are numerous finds of roman artifacts and coins all over Scandinavia, some of that payment for services. This tradition continues all through the Viking age and the middle ages, the highest number of Norwegians in Varangian service was probably during the 13th century. We also find a bunch of runestones throughout Scandinavia, telling about people who left for service in Miklagard, Gardariki or other places. Most of these stones, like most runestones in general, are Swedish, but we find them in Norway and Denmark as well.
